The alarm clock resting on the night stand screeched loudly when the glowing green numbers switched to show 9:00. Emma blinked blearily, licking her lips and running a hand over her face. Recently, she hadn’t slept well – the moment the darkness took hold of Emma, nightmares plagued her mind and she would wake up gasping in fear. It had worn on her peace of mind, leaving her exhausted and moody indeed. Last night had been the first night in several weeks that she had had a decent night’s sleep.

Emma shoved her comforter back and placed her feet delicately on the cool floor. She shivered as the air kissed her skin, causing it to erupt into goose bumps. She stood slowly, stretching and yawning before making her way to the bathroom. Emma closed and locked the door behind her, running a hand through her hair. She turned on the shower but before she could take off her clothes, Emma paused staring with wide eyes at her reflection. Emma would swear that she had just seen something odd. Like, for example, her reflection not shadowing her movements.

Cautiously, Emma crept forward. Her heart was racing, her palms clammy. The happiness that had blossomed from the night’s full sleep was gone to be replaced by fear that curdled like sour milk in her stomach. Emma didn’t know why exactly she was so afraid, just that something was wrong. She leaned forward, peering into the mirror. Her reflection seemed fine; it was indeed just her reflection.

That’s when the mirror version of herself winked.

Emma screamed and tried to jump backwards but a hand reached out from inside the mirror and wrapped around her wrist with a bruising grip. Emma tried to fight back but the hand yanked her forward as though she weighed less than a feather. She thought she was going to collide with the wall but instead Emma fell through the mirror. Emma landed hard on what seemed to be ground. She scrambled into a kneeling position and looked around fearfully. Darkness, just darkness was what she saw. Emma looked up and saw that there was a square of bright light.

She wanted to get to it, but didn’t know how. What is it? When this thought entered her mind, Emma floated upwards and saw that it was a window that looked into her own bathroom. Right where her mirror was. And standing opposite of it was someone who looked like herself. The fake Emma smiled maliciously, “Let’s see how you do, trapped inside a mirror dear one.”

Why did you do this to me? What’s going on? Emma screamed. But she had no voice. Her hands closed around her throat in fear, her eyes burning with unshed tears. The fake Emma laughed and stripped off her clothes which were very different than the ones that the real Emma had been wearing and slid into the shower.

Emma floated down to the floor and curled into a ball, at a loss as to why she was cursed to live inside a mirror.

This is for the contest hosted by :iconimaaf-artist: and the prompt was "Mirror". I liked writing this, I honestly didn't think when I was writing. I just let my pencil move with whatever story entered my mind.

Loved the style of narration, the plot however towards the end became predictable, I was hoping for a philosophical angle or a motive as to why the reflection did what it did.
